Sultan Qaboos of Oman asked for a perfume house in 1983. Moreover, he wanted Oman's frankincense heritage represented at the highest level of global perfumery. Prince Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi founded Amouage in Muscat to deliver that vision. Furthermore, the Sultan hired Guy Robert the French perfumer behind Hermès Calèche and Madame Rochas to create the first composition. Robert considered Amouage Gold his crowning achievement. Consequently, the brand launched with a pedigree no other Arabian house can match. The compositions still use Omani Boswellia sacra frankincense from Dhofar alongside oud, myrrh, and rosewater. Moreover, EDP concentrations run 20–30% oil. Extraits run 35–40%. Bottles retail around €250.
