It started with a perfume I smelled on someone else At Dubai Mall, heavier and stranger than anything sold in a European mall, the kind that changes shape over hours instead of fading in twenty minutes. That sent me down a real rabbit hole: oud houses in the Gulf, attars pressed the traditional way, perfumers who've spent decades perfecting one accord and never once put their name on a Western shelf.

The more I learned, the clearer the gap became. Almost none of this was reaching Europe honestly. What did arrive was overpriced, badly imitated, or sold with so much mystery-box marketing that nobody actually knew what they were buying.

So in 2022, I launched ZAOUD Website, at first. I was importing fragrances I believed in and trying to explain to European customers, most of whom had never smelled real oud, why it was worth the price.

The turning point came when I realized the real problem wasn't the perfume. It was the risk. Nobody wants to spend 100 euros to find out they hate something. So we started splitting bottles into decants that small enough to try, honest enough that you knew exactly what you were getting before committing to full size. That solved the trust problem and let people actually explore instead of gambling.

That single decision changed how the business grew, but it's one chapter, not the whole story. Since then it's been about building the catalog properly, going perfume house by house, testing everything ourselves, saying no to products that didn't meet the bar even when they'd have sold easily.
