MAAHIR BLACK Edition Edp

Lattafa Maahir Black Edition 100ml: What It Smells Like

Lattafa Maahir Black Edition is a 100ml unisex eau de parfum built on smoke and leather. Three peppers open it, a tarry smoke runs through the middle, and the base is dry wood and moss.

The black in the name is not just packaging. One material in the heart is made by burning wood until it turns to tar. It sets the character of everything around it.

Lattafa Maahir Black Edition: the short version

  • What it is: Lattafa Maahir Black Edition comes as a 100ml unisex spray, smoky and leathery with a spiced opening.
  • Smells like: Peppery spice over campfire smoke and tanned hide, finishing dry and mossy.
  • Character: Dark and serious. Closer to a leather fragrance than to a sweet oriental.
  • Notes from: Lattafa’s own listing.
  • Best for: Autumn, winter and evenings. Cold weather flatters smoke.

Lattafa MAAHIR BLACK Edition Fragrance Notes:

  • Top Notes: Black Pepper, Pink Pepper, Saffron.
  • Middle Notes: Cade oil, Labdanum, Gurjan balsam, Rhubarb.
  • Base Notes: Leather, Cedar, Guaiac Wood, Patchouli, Moss, Musk.

Lattafa publishes this list for Maahir Black Edition on its own store, and classes the fragrance as amber spicy.

What Lattafa Maahir Black Edition smells like

Three spices open it at once and they do not behave the same way. Black pepper gives the dry bite and pink pepper adds a rosy fruitiness on top of it. Saffron brings its leathery, slightly metallic edge underneath. Together they read sharp and warm rather than simply hot.

Smoke arrives in Lattafa Maahir Black Edition within a minute, and it does not leave. The cade oil in the middle smells of campfire embers and tanned hide. A creosote sharpness runs through it, closer to a bonfire than to incense. This is the moment the fragrance declares what it is.

Then something unexpected cuts across it. Rhubarb is tart, green and faintly sour, and finding it inside a smoky leather composition is genuinely odd. It works, though, because the sourness lifts the tar and stops the middle from turning claggy.

Labdanum and gurjan balsam fill in around the smoke. Labdanum is sweet, resinous and leathery, and gurjan balsam is woody and peppery. Between them they give the composition an ambery body that keeps it from turning purely harsh.

The base is dry and long. Leather and guaiac wood carry the smoke forward, and cedar adds pencil-shaving dryness. Patchouli brings damp earth, and the moss underneath gives a bitter green floor. Musk is the only soft thing in it.

Worn through an evening, Lattafa Maahir Black Edition goes from spicy to smoky to dry and mineral. It never turns sweet, which is unusual in this price bracket and is the main reason it stands out.

Cade oil is where the black comes from

Perfumers distil, press or extract almost everything they work with. Cade oil they burn.

Cade comes from the prickly juniper. Producers heat the wood and roots to between four and six hundred degrees with almost no oxygen. The wood does not evaporate at that temperature, it decomposes, and what condenses out is a thick black tar. The trade calls the process destructive distillation, which is an accurate name.

The origin is audible in the smell. Cade is phenolic and sharp, like campfire embers mixed with tanned hide and creosote. It runs harsher and more medicinal than the birch tar most leather accords rely on. After a few hours it softens and the leather underneath comes through.

Perfumers use tiny amounts, often well under one percent of a formula. Any more would flatten everything else in the bottle. Its tenacity runs into hundreds of hours on a test strip. That is why the smoke in Lattafa Maahir Black Edition outlasts the pepper by most of a day.

Worth knowing that the crude material is not permitted in cosmetics. Only a rectified version reaches a finished fragrance, cleaned of its heaviest fractions. You are smelling the refined form rather than raw tar.

The pink pepper is not pepper

Pink pepper looks like a peppercorn and is sold beside them, but botanically it has nothing to do with black pepper. It is the berry of the Peruvian pepper tree, and that tree belongs to the cashew family, alongside mango and pistachio.

The smell follows the botany rather than the name. Pink pepper opens sharp and almost mentholated, then turns rosy and fruity, softer and more transparent than real pepper ever gets.

The rosiness is why it sits next to saffron in Lattafa Maahir Black Edition. Saffron has a leathery, metallic quality that can read harsh alone, and the fruity side of pink pepper rounds it off. The two peppers are not doing the same job, which is the point of using both.

Who Lattafa Maahir Black Edition suits

Anyone who wants smoke and leather without oud. There is no agarwood in this at all. The darkness comes from burnt juniper, guaiac wood and moss instead, which reads less medicinal than a heavy oud.

Cold weather suits it. Smoke and tar feel bracing in cold air and oppressive in heat. This is an autumn and winter bottle rather than a year-round one.

Anyone tired of sweet will find relief here. Lattafa Maahir Black Edition has no vanilla, no gourmand sweetness and barely any fruit beyond the tart rhubarb. That makes it a real alternative to most of what sells at this level.

Skip it for an office. Smoky leather at close quarters is a lot to ask of colleagues, and this is not a quiet fragrance.
