IBRAQ Tobacco Collection: Nine Countries, and What Those Names Actually Mean.

The IBRAQ Tobacco Collection is a nine-piece set from the Saudi house Ibrahim Al Qurashi, holding 20 ml of each fragrance. Every one is named after a tobacco country: Mexican, Jamaican, Cuban, Dominican, Greek, Spanish, Arabian, French and Brazilian.

The names are the interesting part, and they do not work the way the box suggests. These are nine different perfumes sharing a theme, not nine readings of nine tobaccos. The brand never actually claims otherwise.

IBRAQ Tobacco Collection: the short version

  • What it is: The IBRAQ Tobacco Collection holds nine fragrances, 20 ml each.
  • Start with: Arabian for the sweetest, Brazilian for the most intense, Cuban for the classic tobacco idea.
  • Be warned: Greek is a fruity-floral and French is a citrus. Neither reads as a tobacco fragrance.
  • Full sizes: All nine exist at 100 ml, and four also come in 200 ml.
  • Best for: Sampling across a theme, and gifting to someone who likes tobacco fragrances.

Ibraq All nine, profiled

Here is every fragrance in the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection, ordered by how much tobacco you actually get rather than by how they sit in the box.

  • Cuban — Cocoa and tobacco over sandalwood, leather and vanilla, finishing on honey and coconut. The closest thing here to the classic sweet-leather tobacco.
  • Arabian — Tobacco, iris and saffron into salted caramel, rose and tonka, closing on smoked coffee, amber and musk. The sweetest of the nine.
  • Brazilian — Bergamot, lavender, pink pepper and chilli over tobacco, oud, cherry and cedarwood, with leather and vetiver beneath. The most intense thing in the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection.
  • Mexican — Cedarwood and dark chocolate into lilac and cinnamon, over amber, tobacco and rose. Chocolate and rose, warmer than it sounds.
  • Jamaican — Amber and patchouli into cedar, oud and tobacco, closing on vetiver and jasmine. Earthy and woody rather than sweet.
  • Dominican — Cinnamon, lavender and tobacco over guaiac wood and orchid, with bergamot, neroli and saffron below. Spicy and unusually bright for the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection.
  • Spanish — Aquatic notes, saffron and tonka into cocoa, amber and tobacco, over iris and woods. Marine and cocoa, the oddest pairing in the box.
  • French — Blood orange, green apple and mandarin into green tobacco, neroli, cinnamon and ginger, over guaiac wood, lemongrass and frankincense. A citrus, essentially.
  • Greek — Lychee, narcissus and rose into apricot, orange blossom and iris, with peony, musk and tobacco at the base. A fruity-floral.

The country names describe the perfume, not the tobacco

Read the brand’s own wording on the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection carefully. It calls these nine fragrances inspired by the finest tobacco from around the world. Inspired by is doing all the work in that sentence.

Across every IBRAQ store, the house never says it buys Cuban, Dominican or Brazilian tobacco. It names no supplier, no origin, no varietal and no extraction method, and it never claims the nine differ in raw material. The absence is consistent enough to be deliberate.

The compositions say the same thing. If the names tracked real material differences, tobacco would be the constant and everything around it the variable. In the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection it runs the other way: the tobacco recedes or disappears while the supporting cast changes completely.

That is not a criticism. Nine variations on a theme is a legitimate and rather charming idea. It just means you should shop by the notes rather than by the flag.

Greek Tobacco gives the game away

Here is the detail that settles it. Of the nine country names in the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection, exactly one corresponds to a real perfumery tobacco: Greek. Oriental tobacco, also called Turkish, is a small-leaf sun-cured variety grown across historic Thrace and Macedonia, land now split between Greece, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Turkey. It is one of the few leaf types that genuinely reaches the fragrance trade.

And Greek Tobacco is the one fragrance in the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection with no tobacco accord at all. Tobacco sits in its base notes, but the published accord ranking lists fruity, floral, fresh, rose, powdery, tropical, white floral, musky, yellow floral and sweet. Tobacco does not appear anywhere on it.

So the single name with a genuine raw-material basis belongs to the least tobacco-smelling fragrance in the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection. Whatever logic drove the naming, it was not the contents of the bottles.

What perfumery tobacco actually is

The fragrance trade does not buy tobacco by country. It buys it by leaf type, and there are only a handful: Virginia is the usual source for tobacco absolute, with Burley, Oriental and Latakia used less often.

Origin and leaf type are separate things, which is where the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection’s country framing really breaks down. One supplier sells a Burley tobacco absolute grown in Bulgaria. Burley is American in origin, the crop is Bulgarian, and no part of that maps onto a cigar country.

There is a further constraint worth knowing. Tobacco absolute sold for perfumery is denicotinised, because nicotine is banned outright from cosmetics in Europe, and published guidance caps the material at around one percent of a fragrance concentrate. Most of what reads as tobacco across the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection is built from other materials.

Which of the nine to try first

Sort the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection by what each one actually smells like and the box becomes usable. Four are recognisably tobacco fragrances: Cuban, Arabian, Brazilian and Mexican. Start there if tobacco is what you came for.

Three sit in the middle. Jamaican runs earthy and woody, Dominican spicy and bright, Spanish marine and cocoa. All three carry tobacco but none leads with it.

Two are not tobacco fragrances in any useful sense. French is a citrus with a green tobacco note buried in the heart, and Greek is a fruity-floral. Both are perfectly good, and both will disappoint anyone who bought the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection for smoke.

Who the IBRAQ Tobacco Collection suits

Anyone who likes tobacco fragrances and wants to find their register within it, since the nine spread from sweet caramel to dry leather to bright citrus. At 20 ml each these are working bottles rather than samples.

It also makes an unusually safe gift for a tobacco wearer, because the odds of at least two landing well are good.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about shipping, authenticity, and caring for your fragrance.

01 What size does IBRAQ Black Diamond Incense come in?
Two spray sizes plus a small oil. Check which one a listing is actually selling, because sellers mix them up.
