Ginger is the loudest thing in the opening and it saves the fragrance from being a plain citrus cologne. Lemon and grapefruit sharpen it, mango rounds the edges without adding sweetness, and the whole top accord reads crisp rather than juicy.

Violet and jasmine sit quietly in the middle while cedarwood takes over. The base is where it gets interesting: ambergris and oakmoss give a dry, mineral, slightly bitter finish. This is a fresh woody chypre, not an oriental, and it is the only fragrance in the Lattafa Opulent Collection you would wear on a hot afternoon.

One warning. A note list circulates online showing bergamot, mandarin, peach and a Dubai chocolate note over rose and saffron. That list is wrong. Lattafa's own product page gives lemon, ginger, grapefruit and mango. Some of the confusion comes from a separate release named Opulent Dubai Chocolate. If a listing shows chocolate in this bottle, it has the wrong pyramid.

Saffron, bergamot, blood orange, pink pepper, pear and cardamom. Heart of jasmine, cognac, heliotrope, rosewood, patchouli and cashmeran. Base of dry amber, leather, cedarwood, agarwood, vanilla, tonka bean and sandalwood.

This is the most crowded composition in the Lattafa Opulent Collection and the one that smells most expensive. Blood orange and pear open it, cardamom and pink pepper give the spice, and cognac in the heart brings a boozy warmth that carries the whole thing.

The base is where Opulent Red earns its reputation. Leather, tonka, vanilla and dry amber stack into something thick and sweet without turning into a dessert. Cashmeran adds that slightly fuzzy, warm-wool texture underneath. Cold weather suits it. Summer does not.

Saffron and orange. Heart of dry amber and a gourmand accord. Base of oakmoss, musk and woods.

The name misleads slightly. This is not a clean white musk in the laundry sense. Saffron and dry amber make Opulent Musk warm, faintly sweet and a little leathery, with the musk acting as a soft blanket underneath rather than the headline.

It is the quietest of the four and the easiest to wear daily. It also layers well, since a soft ambered musk sits comfortably under anything sharper. Worth noting that Lattafa lists a gourmand accord here rather than a specific material, which tells you this is a simpler composition than Opulent Red.

Lattafa Opulent Oud: notes and how it smells

Cinnamon and saffron. Heart of rose and oud wood. Base of cedarwood, oud and amber.

This is the most traditional structure in the Lattafa Opulent Collection. Cinnamon and saffron opening into rose and oud is the classic Gulf arrangement, and Lattafa plays it straight here rather than modernising it.

The oud is the smooth, woody, slightly sweet kind rather than the barnyard-medicinal kind, which makes it wearable for anyone new to agarwood. Rose keeps it from going flat. Cedar and amber dry it out at the end. This is the bottle to reach for at a wedding or a winter dinner.
