Animalic notes make perfumes smell alive. Moreover, they add a warm, skin-like, slightly raw quality that clean florals and fresh citruses cannot provide. The category originally used real animal materials: civet from civet cats, castoreum from beavers, ambergris from sperm whales, and musk from musk deer. Furthermore, all of these are now either banned, restricted, or replaced by synthetic alternatives. Modern animalic compositions use lab-built molecules that recreate the warmth without the cruelty. However, the smell itself remains challenging. At low doses, animalic notes feel sensual and human. At high doses, they can smell like wet fur, sweat, or worse.

Consequently, this is the most polarising collection we carry. It is not for beginners. In Arabic perfumery, animalic character often comes directly from oud. Indian oud in particular carries a barnyard-like warmth that European noses rarely expect.
