What is cognac in perfume?

Cognac oil is a real material, and it is stranger than the name suggests. Perfumers also call it wine lees oil, and it is steam distilled from the lees, the yeasty sludge left in the barrel once wine has fermented and aged.

The smell in Afnan Stardust does not come from alcohol at all. It comes from yeast cells breaking down, a process called autolysis, which produces that fermented, bready, wine-soaked character.

Green cognac oil leaves the still an emerald colour, and the grapes have nothing to do with it. The oil takes that colour by oxidising against the copper walls of the still.

It is also powerful. Suppliers cap it near two percent of a fragrance concentrate and most formulas use far less, because the oil is tart, diffusive and tenacious in very small doses.

Here it has one job. The cognac sits between the caramel and the myrrh, and it stops the sweet half and the resinous half of Afnan Stardust from separating into two fragrances.

Why does Afnan Stardust smell powdery?

Powdery is the fourth strongest accord wearers report for Afnan Stardust, and not one of the fifteen notes is a powder note. The powder is not an ingredient. It is what three of the listed materials produce together.

Aldehydes supply the first part, a waxy soapy cleanliness closest to ironed linen. Tonka bean supplies the second through coumarin, which makes up a quarter to a half of tonka absolute and smells of dry hay and bitter almond with a powdery edge of its own. Musk smooths the join.

Citrus and aldehydes are the opposite kind of material, the lightest in perfumery, and they leave first however much you spray. So the extrait makes the opening richer rather than longer.
